	Interviews archive MTV First Interview MTV: How did your parents react to your singing when you were younger? You know, did you have this big a voice when you were a little girl? A: Oh, please. At, like, two, I'd be imitating things on the radio, like, verbatim. Note-wise and the whole nine. And [my mom would] turn around and go, "Oh my God." My grandmother would nickname me "Stage" instead of "Anastacia," You know, "This one needs to go on the stage, this one." Actually, my mother didn't let me pursue anything theater-wise until I was about 16, 'cause she wanted me to be a kid. I was a real kid. I was very much a kid. MTV: What are your influences, musically? A: It was really my family -- my mother and my father being influences, if I was influenced by the business. The records that we had in the house were Barbra Streisand, Elton John, "Hair," Broadway musicals, 'cause my mother was Broadway. So like, that kind of thing was my influence. It wasn't what I sound like. I mean, my sister and I had no idea that half these funk bands were white. We thought they were all black. We were like, "Really?" It's just that we didn't have that exposure as children. I had it more when I was, like, going to clubs and listening to the music. It all felt familiar to me, but I never knew who would be singing those songs. MTV: What's your album going to sound like? What's its flavor? A: I don't call it "diva," and I don't call it "big." I call it real. My music is as real as I am, and it just doesn't come realer. I don't mean that I'm the realest person in the world -- I mean, my album is going to be how it's accepted. I don't want it to have a label. I don't want it to focus on one and not the other. It's gonna affect the people it affects, and so far it's affected a pretty decent amount of people. Just from you guys and MTV and "The Cut," and I'm, like, recognized on the street from you guys, and I can only be so grateful. They're like "Wow." I didn't realize what that was gonna do for me. MTV: Tell me about your writing process. A: It depends on where I'm coming from that day. It depends on what I feel I haven't said on the album when I was writing it. There's many different songs, and all of them say a little bit of something different, and all of them are very powerful messages. Strong. A lot of strength comes out of this album, because I've really been pushed to my limit to get strength in this business. If you don't got it, then you're just gonna fall, and you just gotta find it somewhere. Usually it's from inside. So most of my stuff is coming from my feelings and what I believe in, which is just happiness and positivity. MTV: What do you write about? A: There are some love songs of just finding a person in life, and just an element of bliss. And there are some songs about people that have lied to you and the fact that they are living in lies, and that's wrong. There are songs about: "I'm tired about the way I'm being treated, so I'm out of here, " you know, pretty much those kind of messages which are very simple messages, but I have a very big way of saying my message. MTV: So has this all been surreal? The deal, the album coming out? A: Oh, yeah, it'll be surreal 'til forever. I'm living in the moment, and I don't want to lose it. It can be taken away tomorrow. I'm not guaranteed a platinum album. I'm not guaranteed anything. So I'm really grateful for sitting with you, for interviewing with you and I'm grateful for being able to record today, and that's just today. I live in today, and that's it. I don't live in yesterday, and I don't live in hoping about tomorrow, it's just about now.
