MTV Asia 2000

She's Macy Gray's buddy, Vanessa Amorosi's biggest fan and finds Elton John's glasses inspiring. This 28-year-old American soulstress has been all over the Australian charts with her m onster hits, "I'm Outta Love" and "Not That Kind of Girl". But who is the real Anastacia Newkirk and exactly what songs does she sing with the top down?

Where are you and what are you doing?
I'm in Calfornia, hanging out with my boyfriend, having a couple of days off before starting my American tour.

The year 2000 was a hectic one; how many miles do you think you covered?
Oh God, I don't know. But my passport needs new pages. I don't know how many miles, but it's a lot. A real lot.

Is the pop life a bit like living in a bubble?
Well, I feel that what I was doing seven months ago was another life; I've gotten used to doing what I'm doing on a regular basis. Now it's normal; it's also strange and different and lonely, but I've gotten used to it.

How do you unwind?
Because of the kind of person I am I don't stay relaxed. I'm not really a relaxing kind of personality, I'm someone who's out there doing what I do with my heart and soul all the time.

You were in Australia twice during 2000: what stays in your mind?
How nice things and people are there. Genuinely nice, not trying to be nice; it's a world that really is untouched by what I believe America is. It's a separate entity, very free spirited people. It's quiet, too. At one point I was going "I've been here two weeks and I haven't heard one siren." I'm reallly appreciative of how well I've done there.

Where else are you going well?
England. They love me over there. That was the last country outside of America that we went to. They call me a "bird", too, which I like. I think it means I'm savvy.

Recently, I witnessed a car-full of women stopped at a red light singing "I'm Outta Love" at the top of their voices...
That's beautiful. That's one of the truest compliments you can get.

So what do you sing with the top down?
It all depends on what's on the radio: could be Britney, 'N Sync, Backstreet Boys, doesn't matter. It could be Eminem; he writes good songs. I'm cool with Eminem - those subjects are his subjects. Do I have to be affected by it? No, not if I choose not to. I admire his humor and his talent and his success. He is who he is.

Do you think "I'm Outta Love" has karaoke potential?
I already know it does. A friend of mine brought a piece of paper to me ripped out of a karaoke songbook. So there you go.

Tell me about your tattoos . . .
I have two, one on my lower back most people have seen. I never get to show the other one, which is in the middle of my shoulderblades - my hair hangs low and my bra-strap covers it, so it's hard to show it. It says the word "forever". My boyfriend inspired it. His name is Sean, he's an actor. He came to Australia with me. Loves XXXX beer.

How can an actor and a singer keep a relationship going?
Day to day is the only way, that's the only thing I can tell you. I can't give anyone advice, because I'm learning myself. It's a bit like being a military couple - life in the music industry is like being in the army. The record company often wakes me up way earlier than needs to happen, I'll tell you. But I bet military people don't have to hit a high C at six in the morning with crust in their eyes.

Do you think there's enough music in the music industry?
You know, I don't sing as much as I'd like to, as far as concerts go. But I'm at the beginning, which is really about getting to know people, do a lot of press, interviews. I'm hoping that after a few albums I don't have to do as much explaining about myself. But it's OK, I love it. I'm very honest, I'm very open. I need people like you because without you there is no article.

How would you describe your relationship with Macy Gray?
We are buddies, but I haven't seen that girl in a while. We both love shopping and telling each other what we should buy. But now unless we happen to be on the same bill we don't even get to see each toher. I have so much admiration for her: she's a killer mom, she has three kids and is still rocking. That's a lot.

Rumor has it you do a wicked impersonation of her.
Anyone who has that high a voice is easy to do, to mimic. That's the kind of voice that happens once every decade. I'm sure she's seen my impersonation.

And you recently performed at Madison Square Garden with Elton John. How'd it feel?
Amazing. I met him last year at the Grammys, then he did an article in a magazine reviewing my album. In September my management got a call saying that he wanted to sing with me. I said "where?" They said "Madison Square Garden". I was amazed. He asked me to pick the song, (so) I picked Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting). On the day I had maybe five minutes rehearsal and he said "you take the first verse, I'll take the second". (She shrieks) I felt so into the moment with everything that went onstage. I could have done it for hours. I haven't been able to see it yet, though. I saw an ad for the album somewhere overseas and I went "oh my God - that's me!"

Have you always been a fan?
His music was always about when I was a kid. But he stuck with me more because I loved his glasses. When I was a kid and had to get glasses, my first reaction was "I have to get ones with windscreen wipers". Wear 'em outside when it's raining, that kind of thing. (Eventually) I got some in a bunch of shapes and colors, but no windscreen wipers, though.

Do you have any other celebrity pals that we should know about?
Vanessa Amorosi - her and I are a lot alike. From the first moment I was in Australia, I was in Brisbane, and on MTV there was "Shine". That very trip I got her album. I believe she deserved thos ARIAs. But that's the music industry: sometimes when you think it's going to happen, it doesn't. Could be politics, not enough media, too much media - but I think she really deserved it. She's too brilliant not to.
